Fencing Equipment
New fencers don’t need to buy anything to start — the club provides masks, jackets, gloves, and weapons for beginner classes. As you move into intermediate and competitive fencing, you’ll want your own set.
The club keeps a supply of common gear on hand — masks, gloves, uniforms, lamés, body cords, electric weapons, blades, bags, and armory tools — so you can gear up and repair equipment without a long wait.
What You Need to Fence
A complete kit covers protection, a weapon, and a few accessories. Tournament fencers carry two working weapons and two body cords as a minimum so a failure mid-bout doesn’t end the day.
Mask
Full-head protection with mesh front. FIE or USFA rated.
Jacket
Padded fencing jacket covering torso and sword arm.
Underarm Protector
Half-jacket (plastron) worn under the jacket for a second layer.
Glove
Single glove for the sword hand.
Weapon
Foil or épée with a practice tip (not sharp).
Knickers & Socks
Fencing knickers plus long socks that reach above the knee.

Fencing Shoes
Dedicated fencing shoes help, but any court shoe works to start. Look for strong lateral support, a flat grippy sole, durable material at the toe and heel, and a snug, well-laced fit — fencing is all quick starts, stops, and lunges.
